Pickerington Central uses a huge second quarter to run past Springfield

BEXLEY, Ohio -- In the third game of the day at the Capital City Coaches for a Cure Classic at Capital University, Pickerington Central used a huge second quarter run to dominant Springfield, racing past the Tigers 83-65.

After a tough steal and lay-in from Springfield senior Larry Stephens tied it at 6-6 early on, Pickerington Central used a 12-1 run capped off by a three from junior wing Garner Wallace to take an 18-7 lead with 1:37 left in the first.

While a big three from Stephens cut the Pickerington Central lead to 20-15 after one quarter, it was all Tigers after this.

Forcing a ton of turnovers and scoring a large amount of points in the open floor, Pickerington Central put together a masterful 20-2 run to claim a 40-17 lead with 3:30 left in the half after a putback from Conner Maciag.

Scoring six quick points in transition from Conner Maciag, Devin Royal and Josh Harlan before the half, Pickerington Central headed into the locker room on cruise control, ahead 53-26 at the halfway point.

While Springfield used a big 13-1 run to begin the second half to cut the deficit to 15 at 54-39 with 4:53 left in the third, they simply dug too deep of a hole in the first half to overcome.

Pickerington Central controlled the entirety of the second half after this, cruising to a yet another dominant win in a prime time event.

They move to 5-2 with the win and will be back in action next Friday as they host Shaker Heights at home.

Garner Wallace (6'5 WF / Pickerington Central / 2021): Wallace continued his excellent start to the season on Saturday by taking home MVP honors for Pickerington Central in their big win. Wallace was his normal self in the big win, running the floor for some easy scores, affecting the game in multiple ways on the defensive end and finishing around the length and contact of Springfield all game long. The most impressive part of his game on Saturday were the three triples that the junior knocked down, however, as he showed off a much improved stroke that he's been putting on display in every contest so far this season. Look for Garner to put up some big numbers in the OCC-Ohio this season as he'll be the leading scorer for a Pickerington Central squad who can compete with anyone in the state.

Conner Maciag (6'2 WG / Pickerington Central / 2020): Maciag did a lot of the same things as Wallace for Pickerington Central on Saturday as he ran the floor for a multitude of easy scores, finished through contact and made some really good passes off the dribble both in transition and within the halfcourt. Coming in hot off of a career-high 31 point showing against Reynoldsburg last night, Conner seemed to be playing with a bit of a chip on his shoulder after getting blanked in a tough loss against Pickerington North on Tuesday. When Conner is hitting shots from the perimeter and making good choices with the ball in his hands, he can be a real threat to put up some big scoring numbers on the offensive end as he knows how to get his own shot and can heat up in a real hurry. Watch out for the senior to put up some more big scoring performances as the season goes on.
