Nate Griggs' 22 points in his return to the floor power Delaware Hayes to first win

WORTHINGTON, Ohio -- After missing the last four games, Delaware Hayes senior guard Nate Griggs returned and made his presence felt as he and fellow senior Paul Burris combined for 39 points to help the Pacers secure their first win of the season over Worthington Kilbourne on the road, 59-51.

The first quarter featured some back in forth action with Burris pacing the way for Hayes chipping in six points. For Kilbourne, they got four points each from juniors Cayden Doughtery and Mitchell Tomasek as Hayes held a 13-8 lead.

The second quarter was much of the same as the teams traded baskets with Worthington Kilbourne winning the quarter 13-11. Heading into halftime momentum didn’t favor any team.

Delaware Hayes started to really lock in on defense in the second half, making it very difficult for Kilbourne to score against their 2-3 zone. The key to the zone was their ability to limit Kilbourne to one shot and get the ball up in a hurry as missed shots were like turnovers as Hayes  exploded for 24 points in the third quarter, taking a 48-32 lead into the final frame.

In the fourth, Kilbourne did all they could to get back into the game with their press defense but it was just too little, too late.

For Hayes, Griggs had a game high 22 points as he is clearly the key to this team with the Pacers appearing lost without him the last four games. With his point guard back, Burris seemed back to his normal self, finishing with 17 points, while junior guard Ryan Smudz rounded out the scoring with seven points.

For Kilbourne, Dougherty had 17 points, Tomasek added 13 and Ian junior Schupp finished with eight points.

Nate Griggs (5’11 G / Delaware Hayes / 2020): Griggs had some rust after sitting out the previous four games, but he still came to play as he thrived in transition as the beneficiary of terrific outlet passes as Griggs continuously finished at the rim on the break. In  the half court he showed off some creating ability off the bounce, getting to the rim and drawing fouls or finding open teammates. The senior is the engine that makes the Pacers go, as he changes this team and makes the offense thrive with his ability to create for himself and others.

Cayden Dougherty (5’10 G / Worthington Kilbourne / 2021): Cayden was the only consistent source of offense tonight for Kilbourne. Despite his size, Dougherty had some crafty finishes around the rim. Most impressive was his catch and shoot ability from beyond the arc where he knocked down three bombs against the Hayes zone. Typically Kilbourne is led by sophomore Ayden Parsons and the junior Schupp but Dougherty can be a reliable catch shoot option if he plays with the confidence he had tonight.

Paul Burris (6’6 F / Delaware Hayes / 2020): Burris showed off a well rounded game on Friday in the win. He put the ball on the floor more than we’ve ever seen and was able to create for others finishing with five assists . Defensively he cleaned the glass consistently and made some fantastic outlets passes. Between him and Hunter Shedenhelm, Ashland has some guys that can flat out stroke it from three, as the senior was a blaze knocking down five triples in the win. Burris still offers intriguing length and versatility, as we see Ashland getting the best out of him at the next level.
