St. Charles depth helps as they dominate for four quarters and earn a big victory over Bishop Hartley

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- In the first of two Central Catholic League matchups on Friday, the Cardinals of St. Charles were just too much for Bishop Hartley to handle.

From start to finish, St. Charles applied defensive pressure and scored efficiently from all areas of the floor, earning themselves a 66-44 victory, bringing them to 4-2 on the season and an undefeated 2-0 within the CCL.

St. Charles has excellent depth on their squad as they had eight quality players contributing important minutes to their victory. They are also incredibly young. Of their top eight that contributed for them, there are two seniors, one junior, four sophomores, and one freshman. This team’s future is bright, but they are only concerned with winning right now.

They were led by 5-foot-10 senior guard Spencer Martin who finished the game with 17 points and two assists. Martin knocked down five threes tonight, including an impressive stepback at the end of the third quarter.

The Cardinals also saw lots of production from their two other very talented guards, sophomores Jared Frey and Derrick James. Frey ended the contest with 14 points, four rebounds, and two assists, while making 4 threes. James concluded with a smaller stat line of three points, five assists, and five rebounds. However for James, the 5-foot-8 point guard showed incredible ball handling skills and did a great job assisting in running the offense.

Regarding the bigs, St. Charles has an impressive duo in 6-foot-8 senior Victor Searls and 6-foot-6 sophomore Josh Whiteside. Searls finished with 14 points, six rebounds, and two blocks. Whiteside was only able to contribute five points and two assists, but took a charge and was all over the place making hustle plays. These two will be a matchup problem for almost any opponent they face.

While not a lot of things went well for the Hawks, they were still able to see production from junior Will Miller and sophomore Amari Gaston. Miller, a 6-foot-4 small forward, finished the game with 12 points and four rebounds. For Gaston, he scored 15 points, grabbed three rebounds, and had four steals.

Bishop Hartley struggled to get their offense going throughout the night, partly due to St. Charles strong and consistent defense. However when the Hawks did get the ball moving and played inside-out, they found much success.

Next for St. Charles after this big win is another home matchup on Monday against Bexley.

Bishop Hartley continues their season after Christmas with a neutral site matchup against Ottawa Glandorf. The Hawks will be searching for their second win of the season as they sit at 1-4 after Friday.

Spencer Martin (5’10 G / St. Charles / 2020): Martin can flat out shoot the rock. The 5-foot-10 senior did his part tonight by knocking down five total threes and putting on display his shooting ability. From catch and shoots, to coming off screens, and even off the dribble, Martin made them all and was the biggest factor tonight in a game where St. Charles found production from eight different players. Look for Martin to continue to be a reliable offensive threat for St. Charles and use his leadership as a senior on a young squad to help this team have future success.

Jared Frey (6’4 G / St. Charles / 2022): Frey is another sharp shooter for the Cardinals who can also guard and rebound. The guard is 6-foot-4 and only a sophomore but you wouldn’t have guessed that by watching him play on Friday. He plays with great intensity and maturity that you don’t see in a lot of sophomores. Like Martin, Frey shot lights out tonight from behind the arc, burying four threes. He used his lengthy frame and motor to guard well and pulled down four rebounds throughout the night. We love his all around game and look forward to seeing him progress night in and night out.

Victor Searls (6’8 C / St. Charles / 2020): The Ashland commit did his thing tonight, scoring 14 points on seven field goals around the rim, grabbing six rebounds, and blocking two shots. Feed the big man, he’s got to eat. Searls put on display tonight why he will be playing at the next level. He scored many different ways around the rim, and showed a bit of sneaky athleticism by getting up to block shots. He was impressive using his big frame to get the shots he wanted. Searls also showed he has reliable hands and ball security by making good catches in the post and keeping it high on offensive rebounds, things that coaches absolutely love to see.

Will Miller (6’4 WF / Bishop Hartley / 2021): While the junior is not exactly the flashiest player you’ll ever see, he deserves recognition for the solid all around game he played. The performance he put up doesn’t necessarily translate into the stat book as he scored just 12 points and four rebounds. However, Miller played with a toughness and consistency that saw him hardly make any mistakes and be a reliable player for the Hawks. He did most all of the little things right, and as a spectator, you love to see that. From rebounding, guarding, and taking care of the ball, Miller did a great job at it on Friday.

Derrick James (5’8 PG / St. Charles / 2022): James was a big reason why St. Charles found production from eight guys. The sophomore point guard positively affected the game in each category on his way to a solid game. The 5-foot-8 guard has an extremely tight handle and is great at creating opportunities for others and then finding his open teammates. James plays with a toughness mentality that is incredibly fun to see in only a sophomore. Him and Frey will be a dominant backcourt in the city throughout their careers.

Amari Gaston (6’3 F / Bishop Hartley / 2022): Gaston was able to put together a strong showing in the loss. He went for 15 points, three rebounds, and four steals. The sophomore showed a nice ability to drive to the basket and finish through lots of contact on many occasions. He proved to have nice patience in his attacks and did not force many shots. On the defensive end, Gaston was able to cause a little trouble for St. Charles’ inside attack as he came up with four steals. Gaston plays hard and aggressive and wasn’t scared of going up against a tough challenge. While Hartley is young and playing plenty of first year players, talented young guys like Gaston will help the Hawks program back to its normal competitive level in the near future.
