Bronny James' go-ahead steal and score put Sierra Canyon on top for good

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- In the highly-anticipated and nationally televised finale at the Scholastic Play By Play Classic, Bronny James and Sierra Canyon gave the 15,000 people at Nationwide Arena what they paid for in a 59-56 win over St. Vincent-St. Mary.

With St. Vincent-St. Mary holding a 56-55 lead with 1:02 remaining, James delivered. Inbounding the ball at mid court, St. Vincent-St. Mary watched its prodigal son steal the game away from them.

James, defending the inbounds pass, forced a deflection and stole the ball with nothing but him and 45 feet separating Sierra Canyon from the lead.

The son of all-time NBA great LeBron James created his first legendary moment in his high school career, laying the ball in the basket with 42 seconds to go to put Sierra Canyon on top for good.

Moments later, St. Vincent-St. Mary sophomore Sencire Harris was fouled going to the basket with 39 seconds remaining. While Harris missed the first of two attempts at the line, his second attempt hit nothing but net.

Unfortunately for the Irish, Harris' made free throw was waved off due to a controversial lane violation on senior Marcus Johnson. Sierra Canyon hit the clutch free throws when it mattered most, going up by three points with 22 seconds remaining.

Johnson missed a potential game-tying three on the final possession, as St. Vincent-St. Mary felt the same way Brookhaven felt in this event just 17 years prior. This time, it was the Irish falling on the wrong side of history as Sierra Canyon will fly back to Southern California victorious.

Leading the way for Sierra Canyon was James with 15 points off the bench. The sophomore did an outstanding job getting to the rim, finishing an array of tough buckets, while also connecting on a three-point field goal from the corner. BJ Boston added a team-high 16 points, while Amari Bailey also finished in double-figures with 10 points.

For St. Vincent-St. Mary, Johnson had a team-high 14 points. The big man was terrific on the glass and on the interior, finishing through the tall trees of Sierra Canyon. Super junior Malaki Branham made his return to his hometown of Columbus and contributed 13 points in an impressive showing.

Harris and Isaiah Ingol each finished in double figures with 11 points while Ramar Pryor rounded out the rotation with eight points.

For St. Vincent-St. Mary, the loss on Saturday is a gut punch for a program that rarely deals with this type of feeling. The Irish are arguably the best team in Ohio and will be an enormous favorite in Division II this year.
