AJ Mirgon and Hilliard Bradley outlasted Pickerington North at the Scholastic Play By Play Classic

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- For Hilliard Bradley, 44 is the magic number. Coming into Saturday's matchup with Pickerington North at Nationwide Arena in the Scholastic Play-By-Play Classic, the Jaguars are 68-1 when scoring at least 44 points in the last three seasons.

Though it seemed like they may not reach it on Saturday, Bradley attained the magic number as they took down Pickerington North 45-42.

After Pickerington North jumped out to a quick 11-5 lead with 3:45 left in the first following a tough and-one from junior Casey George, Hilliard Bradley quickly blitzed back.

Putting together an 13-0 run behind three triples from junior AJ Mirgon, the Jaguars quickly shifted the momentum as they went up 18-11 with 50 seconds left in the first.

Ending the quarter on a three-pointer from Jerry Saunders at the buzzer, Pickerington North regained some life and cut the deficit to 18-14 heading into the second.

Following a tough post score from Matt Allocco, Pickerington North went on a 6-0 run to even things up at 20-20 with five minutes left in the half after an easy lay-in from senior wing Hunter Shedenhelm.

Exactly like the first quarter, Pickerington North ended the half with a three from Saunders to knot things up at 26 heading into the locker room.

While Pickerington North increased their lead to as much as three points after a tough finish from Elijah Hawk, the two squads remained very even keel throughout the third. Giving Hilliard Bradley a one-point lead heading into the fourth at 35-34, Allocco finished a tough lay-in after an excellent backcut to energize the Jaguars heading into the final frame.

Taking some really long possessions and playing some excellent defense in the final frame, Hilliard Bradley used a tough mid-range from Keaton Norris and a gritty finish inside from Chris Mayfield to increase their lead to 39-34 with 3:57 left to play.

Cutting the Hilliard Bradley lead to just one, Pickerington North answered with a lay in from George and two free throws from Saunders to make it 39-38 with 1:51 to play.

While the Panthers cut it to 43-42 with just 15 seconds left after a tough spinning finish from Scott, the discipline and ball control from Hilliard Bradley proved to be too much down the stretch as Allocco pushed the lead to 45-42 with two seconds left and Pickerington North failed to get a clean look off on their final possession.

For Bradley, the Jaguars move to 5-0 with the win and will host Dublin Jerome next Friday.

For Pickerington North, the Panthers have now dropped two straight and have another tough contest looming as they take on Pickerington Central next Tuesday.

AJ Mirgon (5'11 WG / Hilliard Bradley / 2021): Giving Hilliard Bradley some much needed early momentum, it was the outside shooting of Mirgon that sparked an early 11-0 run for the Jags. The junior guard knocked down four three's off the catch, showing off his smooth outside stroke and quick release. He finished a tough lay-in and played some solid perimeter defense throughout the contest as well. Mirgon made his biggest impact late in the fourth however, as he made two really instinctive passes leading to late buckets. While his team was ahead just one point, Mirgon split a trap and fired a pass to Tayshaun Mayfield for an easy layup and then threw a beautiful full court pass off an inbound leading to a finish from Matt Allocco. If Mirgon continues to give Hilliard Bradley the offensive production that he did tonight, the Jags will be very, very tough to beat this season.

Tayshaun Mayfield (6'1 WF / Hilliard Bradley / 2022): Mayfield is the epitome of a "glue guy" and we have seen exactly that in our last few viewings of the sophomore over the last week. The 6-foot-1 wing plays like he is 6-foot-5 as he dominates the glass, is a very good interior defender and can alter shots with his size and athleticism. Mayfield is a monster on the offensive glass as he showed off great anticipation and body control in coming up with three tough putback finishes against Pickerington North. We love the way he talks on defense, makes the correct rotations and gives max effort on both ends. Though his future is going to be as a Division I wide receiver, Mayfield has a very good career in store for Hilliard Bradley as he has already made a huge impact in his first season of varsity action.

Chris Scott (6'3 WG / Pickerington North / 2020): Earning MVP honors for Pickerington North in a tough loss, Scott was phenomenal on the offensive end against Hilliard Bradley. The senior is at his best when he can get out in the open floor and run, but if you've seen Hilliard Bradley play, you know that they don't let many teams do this.  Scott made some really good reads in the halfcourt, cutting to the rim and finishing through some contact on multiple occasions.  He beat guys off the bounce for a few tough scores, defended hard on the perimeter played the passing lanes well for a few steals. Scott is another prospect whose future is on the gridiron as a Division I receiver, however he will have to pick up a lot of the scoring load for Pickerington North this season due to the absence of Jack Sawyer and Idris Lawrence .

Hunter Shedenhelm (6'5 WG / Pickerington North / 2020): Making a major impact on the defensive end for Pickerington North today, Shedenhelm defended Matt Allocco as well as anyone has recently and frustrated him on the perimeter all night. With his combination of length and quickness, Shedenhelm is one of the very best wing defenders in the area as he isn't afraid to guard up and force you to attack him off the bounce. He also knocked down two three's on the offensive end, one in the face of some really tough defense, and scored on an instinctive back door cut leading to a left handed lay-in. Ashland is getting a really good one in Hunter as he is the perfect 3&D prospect with the way today's game is played.

Jerry Saunders (6'0 WG / Pickerington North / 2022): Putting together a really solid showing on offense, Saunders both knocked down some big shots and made some really good passes for Pickerington North. He knocked down two three's off the catch and had a tough right finish off the glass attacking the lane, going for some tough buckets against the best defense in the area. He also made some good passes to cutting teammates, making some good reads within the Panthers offense and playing unselfish basketball. If Saunders continues to expand his offensive game and become more comfortable attacking off the dribble, he'll make some big time contributions in the starting lineup for Pickerington North this season.
