South outlasted Africentric in an entertaining City League battle on Friday

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Africentric faced the City League South gauntlet over the last four days with both Walnut Ridge and South coming to the Africentric Field House. Unfortunately for the Nubians, an 0-2 start in league play is a reality after South took advantage of offensive rebounds and transition buckets to keep Africentric at a distance in a 64-53 victory.

South's senior core of Taquan Simington, Marcus Johnson and Trevell Adams did what they normally do - come at you in waves and use their elite level athleticism to punish opponents. Whether it was via offensive rebounds, steals or transition buckets, this trio did it all en route to combining to score 38 points.

We liked what we saw from junior guard Maurice Barnes off the bench, providing great perimeter defense.  Senior forward Sammy Barton had a strong showing as an offensive rebounder and post defender, giving South great minutes and toughness.

South even got solid production from senior reserves Tyrique Hawkins and Shaiheem Pickens.

For Africentric, the Nubians had a solid scoring performance from its backcourt trio of Cali Davis, Dan Wagner and Eli Burke. While Wagner was the hot hand in the first half with seven of his 12 points coming in the opening 16 minutes, Davis took over in the second half with 11 of his team-high 13 points.

We liked what sophomore forward Josiah Smith added off the bench, giving the Nubians a few tough rebounds and inside scores in the first half.

We've covered nearly every primetime player on the floor in Friday's game at length and will continue to see them as the season goes on. We did however want to highlight a young player that really stepped up in a game full of upperclassmen.

Dailyn Swain (6'5 WG / Africentric / 2023): Swain really showed us something on Friday, coming alive in the second half and pouring in 12 points on a few tough finishes. The 6-foot-5 freshman, who is still only 14 years old, is oozing with potential and showed no signs of fear in a matchup against a South team that is stockpiled full of physical, athletic seniors. Swain is a lengthy wing who can really defend and move his feet on the perimeter. Offensively, Swain is a gifted finisher at the rim where he exhibits impressive dexterity and body control. We really like the toughness that Swain showed on Friday, as he played a complete game, was a factor in transition and even knocked down a catch and shoot three in the first half. With Swain being so young and so long, the sky is the limit for him as he is as talented of a young prospect as Africentric has had in the entire time that we've covered the program.
