Green Wave, led by Cole Canter, claws back in fourth quarter to steal game away from Northridge on the road

JOHNSTOWN, Ohio -- Northridge opened their league schedule on Wednesday, hosting a Newark Catholic team coming off of a bounce-back victory over Grove City Christian after giving Utica their first league win in two years. With both teams coming in unproven, a tight game was to be expected, and though Newark Catholic did not hold a lead for nearly three full quarters, the Green Wave pulled out a tough road LCL win over Northridge by a score of 42-37.

Each teams traded buckets as the first quarter began, as freshman Ian Travis scored a nifty driving lay-in down the left side of the lane to give Northridge the lead at one point, with Newark Catholic’s Matthew Gialdini responding with a mid-range jumper of his own to retake it. After junior Adam Ulery tied the game at eight after making one of two free throws after a shooting foul, Northridge stopped the Green Wave on the ensuing possession. With 20 seconds left in the first quarter, Travis hit senior Ben Smith for a layup off an out of bounds play to break the tie and give the Vikings a 10-8 advantage after one.

Northridge was able to maintain their lead for the entirety of the second quarter, with Smith adding two three-pointers during the period and giving the Vikings a multi-position cushion. Freshman Zach Holder gave Northridge a five-point lead late in the half, but a pull-up three in transition by Newark Catholic’s Slater Evans made it a two point game, and the score would remain at 20-18 going into halftime.

The start of the second half saw the Vikings fight to cling to their narrow lead, and they were able to successfully do so, as they stayed ahead the entire third quarter. Senior Travis Neumeyer appeared to have swung the momentum fully in Northridge’s favor with a tough finish and drawn foul with three minutes left in the third, but after missing the free throw, two plays by Slater Evans pulled the Green Wave within a score. Evans sunk a three from the wing on the next possession, and, with time winding down in the quarter, found senior Matt Carlisle under the basket to make it a 25-24 Northridge lead going into the fourth.

After not being able to see his shots fall the first three quarters, talented sophomore Cole Canter finally took over in the fourth, making two quick buckets to give Newark Catholic the lead. Ian Travis tied the game back up with a three at one point, but an and-one by Canter gave the Green Wave another three point lead, a lead they would not relinquish. Five late free throws by junior Bryson Bell and another by Canter allowed Newark Catholic to close out a 42-37 road victory over Northridge.

Though leading for a vast majority of the game, Northridge was unable to string positive possessions together down the stretch to stay in the game. They were led by Ben Smith’s 10 points, which included two threes. Adam Ulery added 10 points and seven rebounds, and Travis Neumeyer nearly notched a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds. Ian Travis finished with five points that included a three. Northridge falls to 1-2 on the season.

Newark Catholic got their offense going when it counted, and it started with Cole Canter. Canter dropped 12 points, eight of which came in the fourth quarter, and added eight rebounds and two steals. Slater Evans had 11 points, two rebounds, and two assists, and Matt Carlisle had nine points, 11 rebounds and two blocks. Bryson Bell finished with seven points, all coming in the fourth. Newark Catholic climbs to 2-1 on the year.

Cole Canter (6’3 WG / Newark Catholic / 2022): Even before he picked up his offensive output in the final period, it was obvious that Canter had a feel for the game that would eventually translate into points for the Green Wave. Playing both from the wing and working from inside, the Bishop Ready transfer consistently took the ball strong to the rim down the stretch to give his Newark Catholic team the lead. The sophomore showed no hesitation in taking big shots and energized his team both with his momentum-swinging scores as well as his visible intensity. Canter moves and handles the ball confidently from the wing and is also active on the glass, using his 6-3 frame and advanced feel for positioning to grab contested rebounds on both ends. Canter, who dropped 22 points in Newark Catholic’s last game, will be counted on as an isolation scorer for his team this season and has the skill to carry the offensive load expected of him.

Slater Evans (5’8 PG / Newark Catholic / 2020): Evans showed exactly why he will be the Green Wave’s on-court leader this season. The senior facilitated the offense from the point guard spot, finding teammates cutting to the basket for timely assists. Evans picked his spots and showed up when it mattered the most, hitting two big threes to keep Newark Catholic in the game. While his outside shot is his calling card, Evans did display the ability to take the ball to the hoop and shield off defenders in order to finish near the rim, converting on multiple tough takes. The wiry Evans also showed grit on the defensive end, taking a big charge, and will have to be the emotional leader of this Newark Catholic team if they are to keep their upward trend going into LCL play.

Travis Neumeyer (5’11 PG / Northridge / 2020): Neumeyer is always a fixture for the Vikings on both ends of the court, being relied on as their main shot-maker on offense and, though a guard, their most dependable rebounder on defense. The senior has a smooth and confident lefty stroke that he is not afraid to use from anywhere inside the volleyball line, and made two of his three point attempts tonight. Neumeyer will need to lead this Northridge team and be able to create his own offense for the Vikings to change their fortunes in the league.
