Tasos Cook scored a career-high 27 points to lead Westerville Central on the road

UPPER ARLINGTON, Ohio -- While Upper Arlington held a 7-5 lead after a quarter of play and looked to be in control of Tuesday's non-league matchup against Westerville Central, junior Tasos Cook had other plans.

Scoring 13 of his 15 points first half points in the second quarter alone, Cook powered a dominant three quarter stretch as Westerville Central rolled over Upper Arlington on the road, 48-27.

The 6-foot-2 wing Cook was a one-man wrecking crew in transition, scoring a career-high 27 points and equaling Upper Arlington's point total as a team. Cook and the Warhawks turned up the pressure in the second quarter, going on a 15-2 run in the final seven minutes of the half to take a 20-11 lead into the locker room.

Upper Arlington fought back in the third quarter, climbing to as close as four points at 24-20, however Westerville Central once again went on a massive run, outscoring the Golden Bears 12-0 in another stretch powered by Cook to lead 36-20 with 6:05 remaining.

Upper Arlington tried to close the gap in the fourth quarter, however, a lack of offensive productive and less than stellar transition defense allowed Westerville Central to run away in the final frame as a big dunk from Cook in the open floor put the finishing touches on a career night for the junior.

Rolling by 21 points on the road, Westerville Central picked up one of its best wins in recent memory, blowing past a young Upper Arlington team that really struggled on Tuesday. Cook's 27 points were a game high, as the junior was the only player in the game on either side in double figures.

Junior guard Quincy Cook added six points, while junior wing MJ Davis and sophomore forward Brad Leonard each chipped in five points.

For Upper Arlington, sophomore Quinn Corna led the Golden Bears with eight points in a rather forgettable night for the home team. Sophomore guard Geoff Schoeny added six points, while no other Upper Arlington player provided more than five points.

With the win, Westerville Central advances to an important league matchup at home against Olentangy Orange on Friday.

For Upper Arlington, the Golden Bears will look to bounce back on Friday when it hosts Hilliard Davidson in league play.

Tasos Cook (6'2 WG / Westerville Central / 2021): Cook continued a breakout junior season with a career performance against Upper Arlington. The 6-foot-2 wing was unstoppable off the bounce, getting to the rim at will and finishing nearly everything in transition on his way to 27 points. Cook was active on defense, showing quick hands that helped him force a few steals. On the offensive end, Cook was able to beat his defenders off the bounce where he finished a few high wire attempts at the rim, had two impressive floaters and made several intelligent passes on the money to open shooters. We love the motor and intensity that Cook plays with, as he's always looking to make a play for himself or a teammate. Due to his athleticism, strength and coordination, Cook is one of the elite transition finishers in the area, as he can rise above defenders and put the ball in the basket in a variety of ways. The next step for Cook is to become a consistent outside threat which will open up his game in the half court, however, we are thrilled with the progress he's made as an overall player over the last few months.

Quinn Corna (6'3 WG / Upper Arlington / 2022): In a tough night for the Golden Bears, Corna was a bright spot at times. The 6-foot-3 sophomore guard was the only scoring threat that Upper Arlington had in both halves, getting to the rim off the bounce where he finished a few times on his way to a team-high eight points. Corna is an athletic slasher that can slice his way to the rim, while also being somewhat of a streaky shooter. With two starters from last season's team gone due to transfer and the others graduated, Corna has been forced into a primary scoring role early in his career, as he'll be expected to carry a big load for the Golden Bears. We think he's definitely capable of doing so, however, this might just be a rebuilding year for the young Golden Bears.

MJ Davis (6'4 WF / Westerville Central / 2021): A player that caught our attention this past summer, it was nice to get another look at Davis on Tuesday. While he only scored five points, Davis made a giant impact on the defensive perimeter and on the glass, where he had a dominant rebounding performance. Davis has great length and supreme athleticism at 6-foot-4, as he was the toughest player on the floor for great stretches on Tuesday. We had a chance to see Davis stretch the floor and knock down a catch and shoot jumper in the first half, while locking down on the defensive glass in the second half. Davis accepted the challenge of defending Corna and made it very tough for him due to his long wingspan, terrific lateral quickness and athleticism. As he continues to add to his skill set, Davis is a late blooming wing to keep an eye on in the 2021 class.

Fred Wilkes (6'0 PG / Upper Arlington / 2020): As we've already mentioned, scoring came at a premium for Upper Arlington on Tuesday. However, Wilkes lands on this report for his performance on the other end of the floor as the game's best on-ball defender. Wilkes is a game wrecking point of attack defender that made it really tough for opposing ball handlers, applying great physicality and pressure while moving laterally as good as anyone we've seen all year. Wilkes is a hound on the defensive end of the floor that prides himself on steals, deflections and defensive stops. We think he's the best on-ball defending senior point guard in the area and should receive college looks for that alone, as he can come in and change a game entirely on the defensive side of the floor.

Brad Leonard (6'4 WF / Westerville Central / 2022): Getting our eyes on Leonard for our first full-length evaluation of him, we were thrilled with the toughness that we saw from the sophomore. A player that is sure to earn a Hard Work Report spotlight feature this week, Leonard played a terrific game on both ends of the floor, coming up with several important steals, rebounds and 50/50 balls, plays that helped Westerville Central establish its lead and never look back. Leonard has a smooth jumper and natural release, connecting on all his free throws. On the glass, Leonard worked really hard, coming up with a second chance bucket in the second half. Defensively, Leonard showed the ability to defend guards and bigs, fronting the post on the 6-foot-8 Magnus Entenmann and helping the Warhawks hold him scoreless, as well as switching out onto guards where Leonard had an on-ball block on a three-point attempt at the buzzer before the half. We love the tenacity that Leonard played with, as he was one of the toughest players on the floor and looked like the type of glue guy needed to win big games. We look forward to watching the sophomore more, as he showed some of the intangibles that really excite us.
