Harvest Prep won its fourth district title in six years on Friday

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Legendary hip hop producer Pete Rock earned the nickname Soul Brother No 2 over the course of his career. Harvest Prep birthed Soul Brother No. 4 as senior wing Soul Hines stepped up in a tremendous way to power the Warriors to its fourth district title in six years over Columbus Academy on Friday at the Columbus Convention Center.

With Columbus Academy taking two leads in the final nine minutes of Friday's district final, Hines knocked down cold-blooded threes on both ensuing possessions, as his hot hand helped the Warriors survive a late scare from the Vikings, 71-67.

Scoring 14 points in the final 8:51, Hines knocked down timely shots in the most important moments of the game, as every one of his triples either gave Harvest Prep a lead or increased it.

With Columbus Academy taking a 62-60 lead with 3:51 to go on a three-point play from senior Hayden Compton, Hines made sure that lead was short lived.

Responding with back-to-back bone crushing threes, Hines' final triple with 2:25 to go put Harvest Prep ahead 66-62.

From that point forward, Columbus Academy got no closer than two points the rest of the way as a big transition dunk from senior Andrew Tate with 15 seconds to go put the finishing touches on Harvest Prep's second-straight district title.

Hines was the most valuable player, scoring a game-high 21 points and hitting five threes. All four of Hines' triples in the final 9:51 came in crunch time. The 6-foot-4 senior helped repel an insane third quarter from Columbus Academy junior Carter Warstler, who scored 14 points on four triples to help the Vikings overcome a 49-41 deficit with 3:39 to go.

Thanks to Warstler's efforts, Academy pulled to a 53-51 deficit at the end of the quarter, however, Hines made the last shot of the period on a gutsy corner triple that put the Warriors up 53-51 and ended a 10-1 run for the Vikings.

Outside of Hines, junior guard CJ Anthony had a relatively quiet night, finishing with 14 points and four rebounds. Anthony battled foul trouble in the first half and didn't seem to have the usual burst that we have come to expect from him.

Senior guard Brandon Beavers added nine points, three rebounds, three assists and five steals in a well-rounded performance. The perimeter defense, elite quickness and tight ball handling of Beavers made a big impact in the second half.

Harvest Prep's front court rounded out the scoring, as senior Elijah Glenn added eight points and six rebounds, while Tate pitched in seven points. Senior forward Raymond Robertson came off the bench and gave the Warriors great energy in the first half, adding seven points and five rebounds in a gritty showing.

For Columbus Academy, Warstler led all scorers with 20 points. The 6-foot guard played with reckless abandon, attacking the rim and pulling up with no hesitation. Warstler nearly did enough to lead Academy to a huge upset, as his 14-point third quarter is the only reason the Vikings were able to overcome a nine-point deficit in the period.

Senior forward Dalyn DeCree added 12 points and six rebounds, while senior Hayden Compton overcame first half foul trouble to pitch in 11 points, all of which in the second half. Compton's final three-point play helped Academy take its final lead of the game at 62-60 with 3:51 remaining.

Fellow senior Dorrian Moultrie finished with 11 points and four assists, while senior forward Chris Boyle added with six points, 10 rebounds, four assists and two blocks in a quality showing on both ends of the floor.

Finishing its season at 20-5, Academy has a lot to be proud of, as the Vikings won its first MSL-Ohio title in 11 years, while coming just a few possessions away from pulling the upset of the Division III tournament statewide.

Harvest Prep advances to the Athens regional tournament to take on the winner of Frankfort Adena and Chesapeake on Wednesday, March 13 at 8 p.m. at Ohio University.
