Newark is looking to make its third trip to states since 2015

WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- We are almost a week away from the state tournament. With regional action beginning on Tuesday, we are getting closer and closer to crowning one team in Division I. Let's take a look at the two regional semifinal matchups in the area on Tuesday at Otterbein.

#6 Westerville South  (19-5) vs. #1 Pickerington Central (25-1)

6:15 PM - Otterbein

Last meeting: Jan. 8, 2019 - Pickerington Central 61, Westerville South 42

Last regional title: Westerville South (none), Pickerington Central (2018)

Game Note: Pickerington Central comes in as the favorite, as the Tigers are undefeated against Ohio competition this season. No area team has played within eight points of the Tigers in any matchup this season, as Central has won its three tournament games by a margin of 148 points. Westerville South comes in hot, winners of their last eight games. In a matchup of two teams with plenty of size, talent and toughness, Westerville South will need to avoid a slow start and prevent turnovers to overcome a Central team that is as good as any in the state. When the Tigers are pressuring and making teams uncomfortable, they are at their best, as there may not be a team with better transition offense than Central.

#5 Reynoldsburg (20-6) vs. #2 Newark (24-3)

8:00 PM - Otterbein

Last meeting: Dec. 18, 2018 - Newark 69, Reynoldsburg 56

Last regional title: Reynoldsburg (2016), Newark (2017)

Game note: Two former OCC-Ohio rivals go at it in the nightcap at Otterbein. Already meeting once this season, Reynoldsburg and Newark are very familiar with each other, as this has become one of the best non-league rivalries anywhere in the area. Reynoldsburg is looking to advance to its first state tournament in an odd year ever, as its last three regional titles came in 2010, 2012 and 2016. For Newark, the Wildcats have won the region in every odd year dating back to 2015, which could make the 2019 tournament an interesting one for the Wildcats.
