A look at all four Division I district finals on Saturday

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- District Final Saturday has finally arrived! With four Division I district finals at Ohio Dominican, Saturday brought plenty of intriguing matchups.

Let's take a look at the games.

Maliya Perry

#1 Pickerington Central 56, #10 Olentangy Liberty 21

As defending state champions, nobody gets into championship picture formation better than Pickerington Central at the Division I level. Opening up on a dominant 18-0 first quarter, the Tigers rolled in major fashion over Olentangy Liberty, cruising to a 56-21 victory.

Central senior forward Maliya Perry was the dominant star in the game, outscoring Liberty by herself, as she finished with 23 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. The Tigers' defensive pressure was far too much for Liberty, forcing 13 steals which led to plenty of transition opportunities.

Despite being blanked in the first quarter, Liberty fought back in the following period, scoring 10 points as the Patriots went into the half trailing 39-10.

In the second half, it was business as usual for Central, as Perry dominated the third quarter to help the Tigers enact the running clock with a 52-17 lead.

In a fourth quarter that took all but 11 minutes in total, Central rolled to its fourth-straight district title in a 35-point rout of Liberty.

Perry was the star, as the Auburn signee dominated both ends of the floor. The 5-foot-11 forward is undoubtedly a top 100 talent in the country, as she can pass, dribble, shoot and defend as well as any player in the area, while having an elite basketball IQ and genuine toughness.

Outside of Perry, senior point guard Madison Greene added eight points and a game-high five steals. Sophomore forward Jocelyn Tate also finished with eight points while junior guard Felicia Ondongo pitched in seven points.

Senior Jada Tate won her fourth-straight district title, as she became the first player in the Tate family to win a district title in every year of her career. The senior forward aded six points and five rebounds, serving as an enforcer inside.

For Liberty, junior forward Teegan Pifher had a strong second half, finishing with nine points, three rebounds and two blocks. Senior post Abby Erickson gave the Patriots great production off the bench, adding eight points and four rebounds in a strong showing.

With the district title win, Central moves on to the regional tournament to take on the winner of No. 6 Westerville South and No. 8 Gahanna on Tuesday at 6:15 p.m. at Otterbein.

Uju Ezeudu and Alexia Mobley

#5 Reynoldsburg 61, #7 upper arlington 32

In the second district final featuring a team from the OCC-Ohio, Reynoldsburg started out much like Pickerington Central did in the game prior. Dominating the first quarter, Reynoldsburg used a 16-1 opening period to roll past Upper Arlington, 61-32.

Reynoldsburg seniors Uju Ezeudu and Destiny Fields powered the vast majority of the Raiders offense, combining for 41 points in a dominant showing. The duo did it from the inside and out, as Ezeudu dominated around the basket, finishing with 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Fields knocked in four threes and finished with a game-high 21 points.

Ezeudu and Fields were the difference, as whenever it seemed Upper Arlington was ready to make a run, one of them responded with a big bucket.

Upper Arlington fought valiantly after the rough first quarter, as senior Macy Spielman sparked a strong second quarter where the Golden Bears got as close as seven points. Spielman was the lifeblood of UA on both ends of the floor, scoring 16 points and adding eight rebounds and three steals. The daughter of longtime NFL linebacker Chris Spielman, Macy Spielman plays with the type of toughness that you would expect from someone with her lineage.

Sophomore guard Annie Hargraves was the only other Upper Arlington player to score more than three points, as she finished with eight, all in the second half.

With its eighth district title in 10 years and first since 2017, Reynoldsburg moves on to the regional tournament where the Raiders will take on either No. 2 Newark or No. 4 Bishop Watterson on Tuesday at 8 p.m. at Otterbein.

Featuring one of the most dominant interior players in the area in Ezeudu, Reynoldsburg will have a strong chance to advance to the regional finals.

Gabby Hutcherson

Gabby Hutcherson

#6 Westerville south 70, #8 gahanna 58

Leading at every point in Saturday's district final, Westerville South started fast and finished strong in a 70-58 victory over Gahanna.

In the game of basketball it's good to have size, and the 'Cats have plenty of it. With its front court of 6-foot-2 junior Gabby Hutcherson and 6-foot sophomore Aja Austin dominating the boards, Westerville South used its size and took advantage of a smaller Gahanna squad for 32 minutes.

Leading 21-16 after a quarter of play, Westerville South stretched its lead in the middle quarters, outscoring Gahanna 34-26 and preventing any type of Lion run.

Gahanna started making shots late in the fourth quarter, however it was too little, too late as Westerville South rolled to its second-straight district title.

Hutcherson thoroughly dominated Saturday's game, finishing with 16 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks to pace the 'Cats. Hutcherson excelled as a three-point shooter, knocking down four triples in transition while swatting everything near her on the other side of the floor.

All five Westerville South starters finished in double figures, as Austin pitched in a double-double as well, finishing with 14 points and 10 rebounds. The wide bodied post was a load to handle underneath while also knocking down a three-point field goal to begin the game.

When the 'Cats front court wasn't dominating, Westerville South was getting excellent production from its guards and wings. Senior point guard Sommer Pitzer dazzled in transition, using her deadly open court speed to set up plenty of scoring opportunities for Westerville South.

Pitzer added 12 points and seven assists, while senior guard Peyton Guice was nearly as good distributing the ball, adding 11 points and seven assists.

The OCC-Buckeye Player of the Year, junior Anyssa Jones added to her decorated career, finishing with 11 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals, while surpassing 1,000 career points in the process.

For Gahanna, junior guard Edyn Battle was the reason the Lions were in it in the first half, scoring 14 of her game-high 18 points in the first two quarters. Battle took advantage of mismatches on the perimeter, as Gahanna used her in the ballscreen game to open things up.

Battle excelled as a facilitator, adding seven assists to go along with six rebounds.

Fellow junior guard Morgan Darnell added 16 points for the Lions, knocking down three triples and showing off range well beyond the three-point line. Darnell was a treat to watch on the defensive perimeter, adding a game-high five steals.

Junior guard Kyra Smith came off the bench and added eight points all in the second half alone.

No other Gahanna player added more than five points, as the Lions just could not get the stops and hit the shots it needed to make a run. After knocking down 14 threes in its district semifinal upset of Dublin Coffman, Gahanna was still hot from deep, knocking down 10 triples, but it was its inability to get stops that led to the wide margin loss.

With its second-straight district title in hand, Westerville South will look to keep rolling on Tuesday in the regional semifinals against top-ranked Pickerington Central.

#2 newark 58, #4 bishop watterson 34

Newark has been here before. In fact they've been here five years in a row. Saturday's Division I district final was no different from the past five years, as the Wildcats got out to an early lead and put Bishop Watterson away, 58-34 to win its fifth-straight district title.

The crisp ball movement of the Wildcats was far too much for Watterson, as Newark knocked down five of six first half threes in a 21-11 opening period. The trio of senior Katie Shumate, senior Morgan Sharps and sophomore Peyton Lunsford accounted for all six of those triples, combining for 27 of Newark's 31 points in the first half.

Leading 31-20 at halftime, Newark increased its pressure out of the gate in the third quarter, going on a 16-2 run in the first six minutes of the period. Newark's tight ball pressure on the perimeter seemed to bother Watterson, as the Eagles struggled to find easy and open looks on the offensive end. Converting three steals for scores in the run, Newark broke things open, leading by as much as 26 at 50-24 with 1:08 to go in the period.

Newark's 19-4 third quarter proved to be the difference, as the Wildcats rolled in a 24-point victory.

Shumate dominated from the opening tip, finishing with 18 points, four rebounds and two steals. The 5-foot-10 senior wing is one of the most versatile players in the area and showed that in all facets of her game. A strong finisher who can really create off the bounce, Shumate was extremely tough to guard for a Watterson team that did not have a matchup for her.

Sharps joined Shumate in double figures, adding 14 points and three steals. The senior guard dazzled as a three-point shooter, knocking down three pretty triples and showing more playmaking ability off the bounce than the last time we saw her.

Rounding out the scoring, junior forward Gabby Stare put in a strong showing with seven points, seven rebounds and two steals, while Lunsford added nine points on three triples. Sophomore wing Emma Shumate had an all-around showing, adding five points, three assists and two blocks.

For Watterson, buckets were hard to come by, as Newark shut off any attempts on the interior. Sophomore forward Kilyn McGuff was a bright spot, showing off a smooth mid-range game to finish with eight points and six rebounds.

Senior forward Grace Jenkins had a strong game on the interior, adding seven points and six rebounds, while junior guard added six points on two threes in the second half.

Sophomore point guard Danielle Grim impressed as a facilitator, adding six points, three rebounds and three assists.

With the win, Newark advances to the regional semifinals to take on No. 5 Reynoldsburg on Tuesday at 8 p.m. at Otterbein.
