A look at the Division III district final action on Friday

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Africentric was the headliner in the Division III girls district finals at Ohio Dominican. However, the Lady Nubians weren't the only team that played on Friday. Let's take a look at both Division III district finals.

#1 Africentric 72, #6 Utica 35

Cutting down nets is something that Africentric has grown very accustomed to over the last few years, and they were reunited with the ladder and nylon again tonight at Ohio Dominican.

Jumping out to an 11-0 start, Africentric wasted no time in setting pace for their fourth-straight district title, cruising to an 72-35 win over sixth-seeded Utica on Friday night. Tennessee-signee Jordan Horston finished with a game-high 18 points, using her size advantage to get steals and buckets at ease over a smaller Redskin defense.

After that 11-0 start, Utica didn't shy away from the moment, answering with a 7-0 run of their own. Despite their best efforts, the Nubian press was too much for most of the first quarter and first half, trailing 45-20 at the break.

The Redskins gave themselves some momentum at the end of each frame though, closing both of the opening quarters with buzzer-beating baskets. Utica was led by Emily Londot in the loss with 15 points.

Africentric advances to the Lexington regional to take on the Shelby district winner on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

#5 AMANDA-CLEArcreek 42, #3 Cardington 34

Defense wins championships, and Amanda-Clearcreek knows all about that, repeating as district champions on Friday night, defeating Cardington 42-34 in a Division III district final on Friday night. The Aces held Cardington to a season-low 7 points in the opening half, and opened up a 17-point lead going into the final two quarters.

After moving the margin to 18 at 39-21 midway through the third, the Pirates fought back in the fourth quarter, cutting the gap to as close as six before the late game free throw battle took place.

The Aces are district champions once again, and will face the winner of West Liberty-Salem and Cincinnati Purcell Marian on Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. at Springfield High School.
