Julius Brown drops 30 points in 63-53 victory at home

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Westerville North (15-3) got 30 points from guard Julius Brown and 13 first-quarter points from Jeremiah Keene to defeat Dublin Coffman on Tuesday 63-53.

The game was tight in the opening minutes with the visiting Shamrocks grabbing a 9-8 lead. At that point, Keene began to start cooking. He hit three consecutive treys for North and added a runner to his 13 first-quarter points, and jump the Warriors out to a 19-12 lead after eight minutes.

Shamrock forward Derek Van Vlerah who had seven first-quarter points, kept Coffman close throughout the second quarter, as he traded baskets with Brown who began to heat up. Two pull-ups and a floater in the lane by Van Vlerah were matched by a Brown layup, coast to coast transition bucket and a eight-foot bank shot that kept the Warriors in front 27-23. Van Vlerah made a lay-up to cut the lead to 27-25, before a Phillip Alston dunk and a three point shot by Brown at the buzzer gave the Warriors the 32-26 halftime lead.

The third quarter featured another outstanding effort by Brown who hit two straight treys, giving Westerville North a 42-32 lead early in the half. Amazingly, Brown was just beginning to do his thing again as he used a four-point play and then his fourth trey of the quarter to surge the Warriors lead to 50-35 with 2:13 remaining. Coffman would regain their composure to make a quick 7-0 run in the final minute behind two Dom Penn three-pointers, before Brown converted a lay-up to make the score 52-42 at the end of three periods. Brown scored 15 points in the quarter.

The Warriors began to get their first resistance of the night from Penn, the star sophomore point guard for the Shamrocks was held scoreless for the first 22 minutes of the game, but began to get more open looks in the final ten minutes scoring 15 points in total. His final trey would pull the game as close as 57-53 in favor of the Warriors, but Brown and Warrior Forward Julian Malone would hit six out of six closing free throws to seal the 63-53 win for North.

Malone played a well rounded game all night for North finishing with a near triple-double, scoring 13 points, grabbing 10 rebounds and dealing out nine assists. Brown and Keene both added four assists each. Alston scored seven points and grabbed seven rebounds. Keene was held scoreless after his explosive first quarter.

Brown, who is the son of former Buckeye guard Jamaal Brown, had to be looking forward to his only meeting against Penn (another Buckeye legacy and son of Scoonie Penn) who is the top rated sophomore in central Ohio. Brown used six field goals and nearly perfect shooting on five treys, to go with three free throws for a game-high 30 points.

Van Vlerah scored 17 points and added eight rebounds for Coffman to grab scoring honors ahead of Penn. Trevor Grady chipped in 10 points for the Shamrocks.

Coffman will try and regroup Friday night when they play Central Crossing, while Westerville North prepares for their Friday night home game against rival Westerville South.
