A look at the top performers from the Thomas Worthington Mega Scrimmage

WORTHINGTON, Ohio -- Thomas Worthington hosted 14 teams from around the state of Ohio on Friday and Saturday for a competitive mega scrimmage before the start of the season. Let's take a look at the top performers by school from the teams representing Central Ohio over the weekend.

Thomas Worthington

Ben Wight

The Cardinals have a young roster, but plenty of promise. Playing all 12 games in the main gym, Thomas Worthington defended its home court for the majority of the action as a few underclassmen stole the show.

Ben Wight (6'8 C / 2019) stood out among most post players in the event. With great height, length and a motor that doesn't stop, Wight continues to improve daily and is still growing. Wight has a lanky frame that he will be able to put muscle on, while being a very good athlete for his size, which makes his prospects that much more intriguing. With an offer from Ohio, Wight visited Wright State on Saturday.

In the backcourt, Thomas Worthington has a few players that will become the cornerstone of this program. Isaac Settles (6'4 PG / 2021) is a freshman to get accustomed to, as the lengthy guard can get up and down in a hurry and showed signs of three-level scoring ability. Once Settles got familiar with the pressure and intensity of Beechcroft's full court press, he really began to shine on Saturday. Take a look at his highlights below. Settles also visited Wright State on Saturday.

Maurice Collins (6'3 SG / 2021) is another lengthy freshman in Thomas Worthington's backcourt to keep an eye on. Collins looks like he's only going to continue stretching out, as he played with a great motor and confidence on Friday, scoring and defending at a high level. Settles, Collins and Jalen Sullinger (5'6 PG / 2021), the son of former Buckeye JJ Sullinger, give Thomas Worthington a dynamic trio in the 2021 class. Sullinger, out with a foot injury this weekend, will be back by the beginning of the season and will be able to stretch the floor for the Cardinals with his perimeter shooting ability.

Beechcroft

Domination. That is the easiest way to put Beechcroft's performance on Saturday. Not losing a single quarter, Beechcroft steam rolled its way through six games on Saturday, punishing teams with its size, athleticism and non-stop pressure, as the Cougars seemingly come in waves.

A senior laden group that is hungry for a ring, Beechcroft was led by Youngstown State signee Jelani Simmons (6'5 SG / 2018), who was the best player in the gym on Saturday. Simmons has incredible length, toughness and three-level scoring ability, as he constantly turned turnovers into instant transition offense. And when teams tried to slow the Cougars down, Simmons punished defenses with his three-point shooting ability, stretching the floor and providing offense for Beechcroft. Simmons is the best player in the City League and will have a chance to take this team far.

Datrey Long

For as good as Simmons was, Datrey Long (6'4 SG / 2018) was not far behind. Running the point for Beechcroft, Long, as he has been for the last three seasons, was the heart and soul of this Beechcroft team, setting the tone with his intensity and aggressiveness. Long applied pressure on both ends of the floor, while getting in the heads of opposing point guards all afternoon long. When Long is out and running, making good decisions and scoring at the rim, Beechcroft is very difficult to stop.

Outside of Simmons and Long, Elijah Bishop (6'6 SF / 2018) was vey solid all afternoon long, proving to be a matchup nightmare on the defensive perimeter. Bishop has the length and motor to get to the rim on most trips, as he will just have to continue to improve on his finishing ability to give Beechcroft max production. Bishop and seniors Teon Jennings (6'3 WG / 2018) and Therron Jennings (6'3 WF / 2018) round out the Cougars starting lineup, as Beechcroft has several players to count on for production at any given moment.

Olentangy Orange

Jalen Bethel

Olentangy Orange was the only team to give Beechcroft a legitimate threat as the Pioneers played tough ball against the Cougars toward the end of the day on Saturday. Not backing down to the intensity, Orange looked very good all day long, as the Pioneers moved the ball, consistently found open looks and could score on the interior if need be.

The man in the paint for Orange is Jalen Bethel (6'7 PF / 2018) who just continues to improve his game. A physical and aggressive post with a big body, Bethel has very good touch around the basket, can stretch the floor out to 15 feet, and is not opposed to contact. With a high academic profile and very good work ethic, Bethel is only going to continue to get better.

In the backcourt, Orange is led by Bryson Lane (5'10 PG / 2019) who impressed with his ability to distribute and make plays with the ball. Lane is a tough kid, who is not afraid to go up against anyone at the point guard spot. With a very tight handle and good vision, Lane made plays all afternoon long, giving the Pioneers a tough leader at the point guard spot. Lane's ability to control tempo and get Orange into its offense was key on Saturday.

Andre Irvin

Coming off the bench for valuable reserve minutes on Saturday, Andre Irvin Jr (5'6 PG / 2021) looked very good at the lead guard spot. Handling at a high level and able to get past defenders, Irvin did not miss a beat running the Orange offense, and made defenders pay with his knockdown shooting ability when left open. Irvin may only be 5-foot-6, but with his fearlessness and toughness at the point guard spot, he is effective as a playmaker so early in his career. Lane is a great point guard for Irvin to learn under and this duo should be dynamic going forward for the Pioneers.

Orange also got solid production out of Luke Ballinger (6'0 SG / 2019) who stretched the floor with his three-point shooting and played a valuable role on defense. Fellow junior guard Nik Brannon (6'3 SF / 2019) was also solid in spurts, as the Pioneers have a good mix of length and shooters to balance out its offense.

Marysville

Getting our first look at the Monarchs since last season, Marysville has a few solid pieces to work with this season. Looking to get back into the top half of the OCC-Central, Marysville will rely on Bodie Eberhart (6'2 CG / 2019) to do just that. A plus-level athlete who can make plays with the ball, Eberhart looked good on Saturday, scoring off the bounce and creating offense for his team. Eberhart is coming off a breakout sophomore season in which he was one of the top underclassmen in the conference, leading Marysville in scoring.

Marysville is also excited about the arrival of Phil Hughes (6'6 PF / 2019) who just moved back into the area, and gives the Monarchs a tough playmaking big on the interior. Hughes was solid in our first viewings of him, playing hard and competing on both ends.

With a young roster still getting its feet wet, Marysville should improve throughout the season and be a tough team to stop come tournament time.

Isaac Settles

Friday Performers

Eastmoor

With the defending City League South co-champions in the building on Friday, Eastmoor looked like a team ready for a run to the title. Fresh off a state final four appearance, Eastmor returns the vast majority of talent from last season, while adding a new addition in the backcourt.

Randy Olverson (5'7 PG / 2018) comes over to the Warriors from Gahanna and was effective in our viewings of him running the EA offense on Friday. A quick ball handler who plays both ends with great intensity, Olverson is a key addition for Eastmoor.

Taevion Kinsey (6'4 CG / 2018) was back to his old tricks on Friday, making plays above the rim and causing havoc all over. Kinsey's length on the defensive perimeter gives opposing teams fits, as he can lock down even the most talented of wing players. Kinsey will have to continue to improve on his perimeter shooting and assertiveness to really make this team go, but from what we saw on Friday, he is off to a good start there.

The unsung hero from this team in last season's tournament run, Tim Smith (6'4 SF / 2018) looked like an upgraded version of himself on Friday. Improved as a playmaker and scorer, Smith impressed with his mid-range shooting ability, hitting tough shots off the bounce, giving Eastmoor some reliable scoring in the half court. Smith can always be counted on to give max effort, as his motor and toughness are extremely vital to this team.

Reynoldsburg

With a core group of seniors who have played together for the last three seasons, Reynoldsburg is ready to make a run this season in the OCC-Ohio. Among those seniors, Tre Williams (6'7 PF / 2018) was the most impressive on Friday, as his all-out aggression around the basket was too much for opposing bigs to handle. Williams enters this season with sky high confidence and much improved athleticism, which can be credited to Williams' slimmer frame, which has allowed him to become a much better athlete.

Williams and Jamiel Goliday (6'0 PG / 2018) are a dynamic one-two punch for the Raiders, as Goliday is a talented scorer and facilitator who can score it in bunches. Look for these two seniors, along with Cole Crosby (6'5 SF / 2018) and Malcolm Murphy (6'4 SF / 2018) to give Reynoldsburg all they have this season, while Ben Fort (6'4 SG / 2019), who did not play Friday, will be the x-factor for Reynoldsburg.

West

The Cowboys have a long way to go this season, as West struggled the majority of the action that we watched, but there are a few promising underclassmen on this roster. Playing big minutes last season as freshmen, Domenic Farley (6'0 PG / 2020) and Abdi Gelle (6'4 PF / 2020) are two players that West can lean on for years to come, as these two were the most productive on Friday.

Farley is a talented ball handler and confident playmaker that West should really rely on this season. Able to handle pressure and beat defenders off the dribble, Farley has a chance to be the best point guard at West in the last few years. Gelle has solid length and scoring ability at 6-foot-4, and was the most productive player for the Cowboys against Eastmoor, which was the toughest challenge that West had on Friday.

*Central Crossing also played on Friday, but we did not get a chance to watch the Comets. Regardless, however, Keason Lowe (5'9 PG / 2018) and Mike Woods (6'4 SG / 2018) are two talented prospects to keep an eye on for Central Crossing.
