A look at preseason awards in Division III from 270 Hoops

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- We continue our preseason awards series with a look at Division III in Central Ohio. With competitive balance bringing Division IV powers Africentric, Harvest Prep and Wellington up and Division II power Johnstown down, Division III will be an absolute war in 2017-18.

Division III Player of the Year

Tre Baumgardner (Sr. G, Africentric)

The Minnesota State commit Baumgardner leads Africentric into 2017-18 in a new division with new challenges. The unquestioned leader of the Nubians, Baumgardner is a talented two-way guard who will be expected to carry Africentric on both ends of the floor. Capable of putting up huge scoring games night after night, Baumgardner leads Africentric into a year where the Nubians are in an unusual position as a darkhorse candidate in the City League South.

Division III Underclassman of the Year

CJ Anthony (So. G, Harvest Prep)

After putting up 13.8 points per game as a freshman, Anthony comes back as the top option in Harvest Prep's backcourt. A physically dominating point guard who is most likely the strongest guard in the area pound for pound, Anthony has improved his game in all areas heading into this sophomore season. With the graduation of Shaylin Waugh, Harvest Prep's leading scorer from last season, Anthony will be expected to pick up the load for the Warriors in 2017-18.

First Team All-Division III

Tre Baumgardner (Sr. G, Africentric)

Brady Thomas (Sr. G, Bishop Ready)

A first team all-district selection a year ago, Thomas comes into a senior season where he is the top point guard in the Central Catholic League. A tough two-way player who can really score it, Thomas leads Bishop Ready into a year where the Silver Knights can seriously compete for a CCL title.

Brian Collier (So. G, Grandview Heights)

A breakout performer as a freshman, Collier shot the lights out last season to lead the Bobcats. A tough lead guard who knows how to play, Collier will be one of the top scorers in the Mid-State League this winter. Look for Collier and fellow sophomore Luke Lachey to take big strides this season.

CJ Anthony (So. G, Harvest Prep)

Demetrius Johnson (Sr. G, Northmor)

The best scorer that you may not have heard of, Northmor's Demetrius Johnson can really go. A quick 5-foot-9 lead guard with a ton of game, Johnson was a first team all-district selection as a junior and should have an even better senior year. Northmor's duo of Johnson and senior big man Tyler Kegley should dominate the newly founded Knox-Morrow Athletic Conference this winter.

Solomon Pierre-Louis (Sr. G, Wellington)

The lone Division I commit on this list, Pierre-Louis may have only played half a season last year for Wellington, but the production of the 6-foot-4 guard could not be mistaken. A crafty offensive scorer who makes winning plays, Pierre-Louis will be expected to carry a big load this winter as the Jaguars look to go to a third-straight state tournament, this time in Division III.

Chris Boyle (Jr. F, Columbus Academy)

One of the very best athletes in the area, Boyle comes into this season as Columbus Academy's top player. A physically built 6-foot-4 forward who can score it from all over, Boyle should take a major stride this winter and become one of the very elite players in Division III in Central Ohio.

First Team All-Freshman

AJ Glover (G, Africentric)

Garrison Budd (G, Bishop Ready)

Marcus Stewart (G, Wellington)

Tyler Kindberg (G, Worthington Christian)

Darius Parham (F, Bishop Ready)

Division III Most Improved Player

Owen Hazelbaker (Jr. F, Johnstown)

The 6-foot-6 Hazelbaker is the next great Johnstown big man. As the Johnnies have produced plenty of skilled big guys in recent years, Hazelbaker is the best since Jason Carter, now a sophomore starter at Ohio University. Hazelbaker can rebound at a very high level, is a skilled inside scorer and has the shooting ability to stretch the floor. Look for Hazelbaker to dominate in the Licking County League this winter as Johnstown will look to win yet another conference title.

Division III Coach of the Year

Dan DeCrane (Bishop Ready)

Bishop Ready may have taken some lumps early in DeCrane's career, but the Silver Knights are armed and ready for a strong season in the Central Catholic League. DeCrane has a few talented senior studs in Thomas and Dawson, while freshmen Budd and Parham will be expected to contribute early. DeCrane and Bishop Ready should strongly contend for a CCL title.
